Fishing Boats & Nets

Fishing boats in France are so wonderfully varied and colourful. From the Pinasse in the small port of La Teste de Buch on the Atlantic to the big Basque boats in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, to the colourfully painted barques Catalanes in the Mediterranean ports of Collioure and the little villages in the region where one can witness the history of the sardine fisheries.

I love the universality of beauty in fishing nets all piled up on the docks. Their colours are gorgeous, the floating devices add a special touch and as a friend pointed out, if you were on a film set, you would have to work long and hard hours to get the perfect draping that one can observe occurring so naturally on the many docks that I have photographed.
