Monuments and Ruins

What is so attractive about the archways with shadows in an old cloister or the ruins of a Cathar Château or even the 9th century church in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert? Maybe the name, maybe what it evokes, maybe even because in Canada all is so new that old stones have a different meaning and one can feel the lifetimes lived behind the very old walls and we can gain respect for humanity and the history of the people who walked and lived there centuries ago.
